The Grand Opening of CyclovaXC!

Well, tomorrow is the big day!  The dream Frank and I have been cultivating for the past couple years (more like twenty if you count the Riverbrook days) is finally coming to pass.  Our doors will be opening in St. Croix Falls!  I received an email from one of our members the other day saying he wanted to "join the CyclovaXC movement" and that's really what we want it to be!  We want to take running, biking, and skiing in the Midwest to a whole new level!

We've already done some pretty awesome celebrations in our shop space (the viewing of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" was the stuff of legend) and we've got a lot of great things planed for tomorrow.  Click here to check out the whole itinerary.

By now you know that we've organized a little bike tour to go rolling out from our store doors at 10 AM, but for more details on that, click here!

I really doubt that we'll be updating too much over what's sure to be a spectacularly busy opening weekend, but we're sure to have photos and adventure stories on Monday!

See you all at the shop space, and don't forget your CyclovaXC gear (we want to get as many of you as possible in the ribbon cutton photo)!

My Wife Says I have Too Many Skis

Yesterday I hung around at the CyclovaXC shop eating powdered sugar donuts, drinking Coke, and opening up box after box of brand spankin' new cross country skis.  I had to laugh because my wife already tells me that I have too many pairs of skis...well, as of now I have about 50 more pairs with another couple hundred sitting in some boxes in the back (numbers are approximated, I don't know how many there are...it just SEEMS like an eternal wave of skis which is awesome!

The only problem at the end of the day was that I discovered I didn't bring my good camera with (well, I brought it, but the batteries were dead), so I had to take pictures with my blackberry (hence the less than usual quality).  The above photo are the new Rossis, plus some special deal Madshus that you'll have to come and ask about.

Here's a fun photo showing the development of the whole shop:

And here are the back country skis and poles we have ready and waiting for you!

Again, this is just the beginning, by Saturday, this place is going to be OVERFLOWING with awesomeness!

See you there!

Trek Bikes In The House At Cyclova XC!

A semi truck load of Trek bikes arrived on Wednesday - along with several Salsa Mukluks!

The day has arrived - Cyclova XC now has Trek bikes on hand!  After the truck driver heroically parallel parked his big rig on Main Street, we got to work unloading our first Trek shipment.  43 bikes on this shipment included bikes ranging from Speed Concept Tri / TT bikes, to 12" kids bikes, to 29" X-Caliber MTBs, to Madones, to the comfy 7000!

Also of note is that we received a shipment of the new Salsa Mukluk 3's.  We are one of few shops around with a size run of these gems - so be among the first to get your hands on these amazing Mountain Bikes - with 4" wide tires.  Don't be afraid, this is an actual high performance bike, but built with 4" wide tires, that float well through snow or beach sand

Wednesday was a busy day for receiving product, with the big rig full of Trek bikes, UPS, Fed Ex, and Speedy Delivery dropping off the latest in amazing bike and ski technology!

Now, we are tasked with getting all of this amazing product ready to sell to our great customers, and prep our store for what will be a bike & ski shopping experience like no other!

Join us in being a part of history, for our GRAND OPENING and the TOUR DE TASTE on Saturday, October 1!

New Cyclova XC Store Sign Is On Site!

Our new storefront sign arrived today and will be mounted on the storefront in the coming days (team work day...)!

Whew!  It's been an intense September to date and it will be until the BIG DAY ON OCTOBER 1!  Rather than posting on this website as frequently as usual, we've (yes we - Cyclova XC has numerous incredible new employees that we'll be announcing soon) been incredibly busy with the build out of the new Cyclova XC store.

Today, our amazing new store sign, handmade by metal working artisan legend Paddy Stevenson of Hayward, WI arrived at our store (thanks Neal / Dad for picking it up)!

This amazing new sign, is Paddy's amazing artistic rendering of our shield and text logo.  It will be hanging centered over our front store display windows (as seen above from the inside).  See our very rough mock up from this July web post of what the sign was to look like at this post from a while back.  The concept was great - but Paddy made it look even better!

In any case, we're thrilled with how it looks - and with this we'll certainly have one of the nicest store signs in town and one of the nicest bike/ski/run shop signs in the country!

Come and check it all out at our Grand Opening and the Tour de Taste Bike Ride on Saturday, October 1!

October 1st: CyclovaXC Grand Opening + Tour de Taste

Hello Everyone!

It's been a while since I've sent out a huge email. I hope you're all doing well and training like it's your last shot at Olympic gold. Before I go any further, let me just give a shout out to all of you who are doing the Fat Tire this weekend! Good luck! I was planning on heading up there and taking photos, but once again duty is calling me to St. Croix Falls.

That's right, the mystical date of our grand opening is quickly approaching. Circle your calender because OCTOBER 1ST marks the day that the ski, bike, and run community CHANGES FOREVER (for the better obviously)! Frank and I are just bouncing off the walls in excitement, and if you've been following our blog, you'll know the stonegrinder has been moved to its new home, and that the walls are painted. There are still a million things to do, but we found time last week to throw an impromptu party and screen “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” at our store (which was totally awesome as you can imagine). Don't fret, it's our goal to make this the kind of shop/club/life-adventure-enabler-consultorium that organizes 100 mile rides and then screens “Machette” in the evening as part of the fun.

If the opening of the shop wasn't enough to entice you, let me remind you all of the event we're hosting: The Tour de Taste. This is a great concept by Frank. The idea is that we're sort of at the end of the racing season and about to make that transition into rollerskiing. What better way to send off the bike season than enjoying a 23 mile tour through some of the most spectacular autumn colors in the whole Midwest! To make matters even better, besides the good company and the spectacular view, you can count on coffee and wine tasting at three different rest areas along the route (more details)!

Honestly, the whole reason Frank and I picked St. Croix Falls for our retail store is because it's beautiful there, and there are all kinds of specialty cafes and wineries in the area. No joke, it's awesome, and we're psyched to show you everything that we've discovered.

And for those of you who don't feel like a 23 mile "Tour de Taste" will be enough training for the day, you should come early and do the 5K Trail Running Race that's being held in the morning. To make it even better,  these bike and run events are part of St. Croix Falls Autumn Fest, a town festival celebrating the season with a wide variety of events happening all day.  With all of these events, EVERYBODY is certain to have a great time! So set OCTOBER 1ST aside on your calendar, this is the start of something big!

Oh, and for those of you who haven't heard yet, CyclovaXC is doing a bunch of custom hats in honor of David Landgraf. The hats are Birkie Founder red and they say “Ski Like Landgraf!” along the side (a catch phrase that I'm sure will be making its way to our next bike/ski/run jersey). The hats are $30 and all the proceeds are going to the ski strong foundation that Emalea and Laurie started to honor David. I've received a HUGE amount of interest in these hats, so check here for details and get your checks in or you might have to wait for a re-order!

So come on up for the day or weekend and enjoy our Grand Opening, the Tour de Taste, Autumn Fest, and all that St. Croix Falls has to offer!  In addition to all of these events, a couple of other huge things will be happening during our Grand Opening Day:

  • Walter Rhein's newest book, "Beyond Birkie Fever" will be officially released.  Included in this is a forward featuring Dave Landgraf's account of the first Birkie!
  • Dave Gabrys' latest photo exhibit, "Cross Paradox" will be opening at Cyclova XC.

4:00PM:  Ben Jonjak presents "Running the Inca Trail With Olympians" on the Cyclova XC big screen - inside Cyclova XC
5:00PM:  Cyclova XC closes the doors after the first big day.  A celebration is likely to follow at the Indian Creek Winery (across the street)

We'll be looking forward to seeing ALL of you on October 1st!

Painting the CyclovaXC Shop

Well, our store place is looking more and more like a bike shop (having a big bicycle tree in the front sure helps).  Here are Neal and Dan diligently painting away.

We decided to go with something approaching Wintersteiger green for our service area.  The blue is just a nice blue that should be appealing enough to everybody.  Obviously, things are going to look quite a bit different as we start loading boxes, etc. into the place and getting the displays up, but it's nice to get a blow by blow of the progress.

What we really should have done is put a camera up in the corner for one of those time lapse films as we painted the area and started bringing things in...darn it, I wish I would have thought about that before.  Too late now.  Just imagine how awesome that time lapse video would have been...imagination is STILL better than anything you see on a movie screen (although Avatar had most of my wildest imagination beat I have to say).
I see we put Neal to work...good (I've yet to see Frank lift a brush, in a picture or in real life,...just sayin')!

St. Croix Valley Tour de Taste Bicycle Tour: Cycling, Fall Colors, and Culinary Delights!

The St. Croix Tour de Taste Bike Tour will start from the Scenic Overlook, where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the river!

As previously mentioned on CyclovaXC.com, we will be putting on a great bike tour event - one that will be a true treat for cyclists of all stripes - from recreational riders to racers.  In fact, this event will likely attract folks who aren't even cyclists!

Welcome to the St. Croix Valley Tour de Taste - a meld of fall colors of the St. Croix River Valley, cycling the best roads and trails the Midwest has to offer, and the best food and drink of the region.

Come for the Tour de Taste, and stay for the day at St. Croix Autumn Fest!  Autumn Fest is a fun Fall Festival celebrating the beauty, creativity, and diversity of the St. Croix Valley.  At Autumn Fest, you'll enjoy a wide variety of events including:  Tour de Taste, 5K running race, great food, family activities, music, arts, kids games, and sustainable solutions in action.

In addition to the Tour de Taste and Autumn Fest, October 1 is also the GRAND OPENING of the new Cyclova XC store in St. Croix Falls - which you won't want to miss!

In addition to a great day and event, we will be giving out customized Park Tool Bottle Openers to the first 50 registered entrants - so be sure to send your entry form and payment in!  Entry forms and full event info can be found HERE.  Following the event at 2:30PM, Tour de Taste participants are welcome to come to Cyclova XC's new store for great door prizes.

For those who seek a detailed narrative and photos of this course, read on:  The course for the event will begin at the Scenic Overlook, going north along the beautiful St. Croix River for on the River Road for 7 miles.  It is on the River Road where the "Tasting Station #1 will be featuring Coffee and a baked treat from the Lucky Cup Coffee Shop - the premier coffee shop in the St. Croix River Valley.  The tour will then climb up and out of the river valley on Otter Slide Road, toward the famous Chateau St. Croix Winery.  From there, the tour will head east toward the Gandy Dancer State Bike Trail.  Riders will then begin heading south on the beautiful Gandy Dancer trail - a hard packed limestone trail appropriate for any bike (including road racing bikes).  On the south side of Centuria, riders will find Tasting Station #2, featuring the delights (coffee and pastries) of Cafe Wren.  From Tasting Station #2, riders will enjoy the gentle down slope of the Gandy Dancer Trail toward St. Croix Falls.  At approximately mile 22, riders will turn west on to Fairgrounds Road enjoying the twists and turns of the gradual descent toward downtown St Croix Falls.  As a fitting closure to a spectacular tour, riders will descend the spectacular Louisana Street to downtown St. Croix Falls where participants will enjoy the delights of the final Tasting Station (#3) at the Indian Creek Winery.

Riders will head north from the Scenic Overlook on the beautiful trail heading toward the National Scenic Riverway Headquarters.
Miles 2-16 will feature amazing backroads with fantastic views, fall colors, and very little traffic.
From miles 16 - 22, riders will enjoy the beautiful Gandy Dancer State Bike Trail!

After descending back into the St. Croix Valley and St. Croix Falls, Tour de Taste riders will enjoy complimentary taste portions of select wines and snacks at the Indian Creek Winery & Grill - to be followed by door prizes back across the street in the new Cyclova XC store!

Come and Ride the Tour de Taste With Us on October 1st!

Hey Everybody!

You're all going to have to clear your calendars for October 1st because it's going to be a BIG Weekend at CyclovaXC.  First of all, it's OUR GRAND OPENING, and we seriously expect ALL of you CyclovaXC members to be there (especially all of you with whom I've had all these email conversations but have never actually met).

In honor of the opening of CyclovaXC, St. Croix Falls has decided to throw a town-wide bash they're calling Autumnfest (Ok, Ok, they've been doing this for years and years...but it's still cool), so there will be plenty to see and do in St. Croix that weekend.  The word on the street is that the autumn colors will be in full bloom, so that alone will definitely be worth making the trip.

Along with our grand opening, we're also hosting a nice, casual bike tour.  Check out the registration form here.

Pre-Registration is $15 up until 9-25-11 and after that it's $20 (you can register starting at 8:30 AM at CyclovaXC, located at 125 North Washington Street, Suite A in downtown St. Croix Falls...you can't miss it).

The ride is a 23 mile loop that starts at the Scenic Overlook at 10 AM (right down the street from CyclovaXC).

Check out the course map here.

Remember this is just a tour, not a race, the idea is to get out in your shiny CyclovaXC gear (or other bicycling gear) and meet some fun new people as well as enjoy the fall colors of St. Croix.  You can also feel good about yourself for participating because this is a fundraiser for the Woolly Mountain Bike Club.

When you get done with the ride, you can hang around in St. Croix with Frank and I enjoying wine and coffee (a cup in one hand and a wine glass in the other...awesomeness)!

We look forward to introducing all of you to the St. Croix falls area!  I think you're going to see right away why we decided to make it our headquarters!

Note: There is also a 5k at 7AM on the same day, so you could come and do both that and the bike ride and get a pretty solid training day in!  Click here for registration info!

The Epic Day of Moving the Stonegrinder

We spent a heck of a day moving that 50,000 ton stonegrinder from Frank's old farm down to the scenic wonderland that is St. Croix Falls.  I'm telling you, stonegrinders aren't any fun to toss around.  They're DENSE! Like fifty times more dense than the core of the sun (and that's super dense as any physicist will tell you).  Fortunately we had five solid CyclovaXC guys so we had enough manpower to haul like seven or eight stonegrinders around (all the extra firepower was just for getting rowdy later...which we did).

The above picture is the moving truck we rented for this massive undertaking.  Notice how the bed of the truck is like 4 feet in the air.  The guys at the truck place said we should get a truck with a hydraulic lift, but we told them they were a bunch of wimps and that we'd just throw the stonegrinder into the back, which we did.

Here's a picture of the mighty lift:
Dan's face looks more like it's contorted in joy than agony.  He must like dealing out pain to stonegrinders.

Anyway, the beast got into the car and we tied her in place so she couldn't escape.  Frank's good at that, here's a picture of his handiwork:
Yup, that's not going anywhere.  We were thinking about riding back down to St. Croix in the back of the trailer on rollerblades but we decided against it.

Here we are arriving at the stonegrinders final resting place (hopefully):
That may look like a hydraulic lift but it's not, trust me when I tell you we just flung that thing into the back.  This was the "discussion" portion of our day as we stood around and decided which way the machine should go and whether or not it would fit through the door (turns out it did...we just had to take a running start at it).

Yup, a heck of a good day of transporting heavy machinery.  We then went out for a beer and I was so excited that the waitress told me that I had to "keep it down."

Sigh...

She was right too, I was too exuberant after tossing that stonegrinder around, wouldn't you be?
