2012 Classic Mammoth Gravel 70 Mile Ride

Over 200 hearty and enthusiastic cyclists came to Cyclova XC in St. Croix Falls on April 21 this Spring for the Mammoth Gravel Classic - a 70 and 35 mile multi-surface bicycle ride.  The 35 mile ride provided a taste of what Gravel cycling is all about, while the 70 mile ride provided a veritable gravel buffet (and then some).

For months we've been hearing from folks that they want to come back and do it again - and enjoy a full weekend of cycling, eating, drinking, story telling, and the outdoors in the amazing St. Croix River Valley.  We have decided to deliver on this request!

So, mark your calendars everyone - the "Classic Mammoth Gravel 70" (and 35 mile Tour de Taste) is coming on Sunday, October 7, 2012.  This event is also a celebration of Cyclova XC's 1 year anniversary - in tandem with the Tour de Taste.

Plan on making a cycling weekend of it in St. Croix Falls - with the Baker Orchard Cyclo-Cross Race on Saturday and the Classic Mammoth Gravel event on Sunday!

The Cyclova XC master plan for Gravel Cycling in the St. Croix Valley is to bookend the cycling season with challenging Gravel Events - one in the Spring, and one in the Fall.  Mammoth Gravel Classic in the Spring - and Classic Mammoth Gravel in the Fall - Yin and Yang!

Registration:  Beginning at 8AM on Sunday, October 7, 2012, registration will be at Cyclova XC Bike Shop in downtown St. Croix Falls, WI.  While there is no entry fee for this event, there will be a mandatory $5 (cash only) Gandy Dancer Trail Use permit, that all riders will be required to purchase.  Along with this, all riders must fill out the event waiver.  As a perk, everyone who signs a waiver, will receive a wrist band entitling them to a free Octoberfest Pint Glass at The Wineries & Grille, as well as food and drink specials at a variety of wineries, bars, and cafes in town!

Bicycle Recommendation and Warning:  This 70 mile course is NOT SOMETHING TO TAKE LIGHTLY.  This is a difficult challenging ride for advanced cyclists - fit riders who are experienced navigators and who can handle themselves in gravel and soft sand.  Riders who are self sufficient in an unsupported ride.  We recommend riding a Cyclo-Cross bike with wide (700 x ~40) tires or a mountain bike with wide tires due to deep sand pits.

Roll Out:  Both rides (35 mile Tour de Taste and the 70 mile Classic Mammoth Gravel) will roll out together from the Scenic Overlook in downtown St. Croix Falls - 1/2 block north of Cyclova XC.  The group roll out will be led by a Police Squad car up to the Polk County Info Center - which is where the event course turns on to the Gandy Dancer State Bike Trail.  From the Polk County Info Center, riders will enjoy about 3 miles of paved bicycle trail, followed by about 14 miles of beautiful crushed limestone surface on the Gandy Dancer State Trail.  All riders are welcome to stop for a refreshing break at beautiful Cafe Wren, which is the point at which the 2 different rides will each go their own way.

From Luck, the course will turn westward, through beautiful rolling countryside - on intermittent gravel and pavement. The course will pass through the small town of Cushing, with the Holiday Station Store being an opportunity to purchase food or drink.

More Information coming soon!
