WAX TIP: Wisconsin High School Nordic Championships

Race day waxing can be hectic, so rest easy the nights before the WI State Nordic High School Championships by waxing in advance.  Above, the author helps classic racers at the Mora Vasaloppet apply the structure of the day.

Following is the Cyclova XC Racing Service 2015 Wisconsin High School Nordic Championships for the 3 major wax brands of the region. Note that these are not officially endorsed wax tips by the wax companies, rather these are tips that I have personally created based on my 17+ years of professional experience in creating race wax tips.

Forecast & Conditions:
TEMPERATURE INFO:  Overnight lows both Friday and Saturday nights close to 12'F, with a temps in the upper teens at the start of both days of racing.  Daytime high will be in the mid 20's both days.  Expect snow showers, with a chance of sleet both days.
TRACK CONDITIONS:  The team of expert groomers at Telemark will be out in force with state of the art grooming implements, producing beautiful machined track conditions.  Expect the track to be a firm mix of old snow with some new powder mixed in.  Sleet could make glazing of the tracks for the classic race an issue, but at this point, not much sleet is expected...  Stay tuned to the above National Weather Service Point Forecast for Telemark Resort.  Remember that snow temperature will remain colder than the air temperature - wax for the snow temp!

Ski Flex Tips (always the most important factor):  Moderate to firm flexed skis for machined track conditions with a bit of fresh snow on top.

Structure Tips:
Structure (All Races & Waves):  Cold Universal Stonegrind or a one pass with a medium structure tool, such as the Toko Structure-Rite Red Roller.

Glide Wax Tips (for both days of racing, as the forecast is nearly identical):
Fast Wax (All Waves): HSLF-10 Green, Scrape, Brush,  HSF-10 Teal, Scrape, Brush.  Apply Flite #11 Cold (Blue) Flourocarbon ironed (using the Fast Wax Base Saver) or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad.  **NOTE:  As a more affordable alternative to Flite Flourocarbon, try the NEW Fast Wax Race Pro Arctic Cold Paste - in stock at Cyclova XC**
Swix (All Waves):  LF-4X, Scrape, Brush, HF-4X, Scrape, Brush, FC-7X (Cold Cera) ironed in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad
Toko (All Waves):  Tribloc LF Black / Tribloc LF Blue mix (1 : 1 Ratio) Scrape, Brush, Tribloc HF Blue, scrape, brush, Jetstream Blue ironed or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad

Grip Wax Tips:
Swix:  Roughen grip zone with 150 grit sandpaper.  Apply Swix VR-35 Base Binder, iron, and smoothen with cork.  Wait to apply your grip wax of the day until Saturday morning, and check wax reports / weather.    The optimal grip wax of the day will likely be 3 thin, smoothly corked layers of Swix VR-40.  Those concerned about slipping may want to try VR-50...  If it rains or sleets heavily on Saturday morning, grip wax likely will be covered klister - likely KX-30 covered with a thin smooth layer of VR-40.
Toko:  Roughen grip zone with 150 grit sandpaper.  Apply Toko Base Green, iron, and smoothen with your thumb while still warm.  Wait to apply your grip wax of the day until Saturday morning, and check wax reports / weather.    The optimal grip wax of the day will likely be 3-4 thin, smoothly corked layers of Toko Blue. Those concerned about slipping may want to try Toko Red...  If it rains or sleets heavily on Saturday morning, grip wax likely will be covered klister - likely Toko Blue Klister covered with a thin smooth layer of Toko Red Hard Wax.
