Sadistic Century Coming August 20th!

Hey Folks!

Dan Woll author of North of Highway 8 sent over this link. Apparently the Sadistic Century is run by some of his friends, and it looks like a really fun time. I also noticed that Lucette Brewery is one of the sponsors.

Organized century rides are a blast, and this one is close enough to home that it's totally worth considering. If you go, let me know. Dan has commissioned me to write an article about this event, so if we have some 1st person Cyclova accounts (and pictures) to draw from, that will make my life considerably easier.

July 27th Wednesday Night Sprint Ride - Game Time Call

Hey folks,

I'm sitting here with multiple hourly forecasts open checking the conditions for tonight's scheduled sprint ride.

It looks likely that there will be some rain and some scattered storms this afternoon.  Depending on who you want to believe, if anyone, it looks like the rain will be diminishing and storms dispersing by ride time.

This is the weather though so who knows really.  It could be a complete thunderbooming washout or it could be absolutely gorgeous.

I'm going to say the ride is tentatively still on, but be prepared for a game time cancellation if conditions are not favorable.  Above all, we want the ride to be safe so please consider your personal level of comfort with riding in potentially wet conditions.


Wednesday Night Sprints Update

Hey folks, we've been going for six weeks now with the Wednesday night sprint rides.  There has been a steady handful of regulars and a nice rotating cast of other participants.  The group has ranged from 5 to 11 riders.

We had quite the crew this past week with a bunch of strong riders.  This is a no drop ride, so I will ride herd on the big guns and make sure they cool their jets between sprint segments to let everyone regroup.

A few things to keep in mind that will make your experience a lot more fun though:

1)  The full ride is 33.5 miles in length and we cover that ground in about 2 to 2.5 hours.  That means the overall average speed has been 14 to 16 mph.  We typically spend a few minutes catching our breaths between sprints so figure on the moving speed being a bit higher.

2) We frequently have folks peel off for home after the fifth sprint.  This makes the ride about 27 miles and you miss the last big hills.  No one will think less of you if you join us for the first 5 and opt for the quick way home.  It has often been some of the strongest riders taking that option.

3) A road bike is highly recommended.  We have had a few folks ride on mountain bikes, but that is a very big challenge and I would only recommend it for the very strongest riders among us.

4) Learn to ride in a group!  This is one of the best parts of the ride.  Here is just one suggested video from online on some recommendations.  The big things are to maintain a safe distance from the rider in front of you, be smooth and controlled in any changes, keep your hands on your brakes at all time, and keep your attention ahead of you.  I wouldn't worry about the rotating pace line parts.  We aren't very good at it!  Plus, lets make the big dogs work.  There is ZERO shame in sitting in and getting pulled along.  I do it all the time and it makes a huge difference in the level of effort.  We have all level of riders here so feel free to ask questions about group ride etiquette.

Group rides are weather permitting.  If thunderstorms, heavy rain, or other dangerous weather are expected the rides will be cancelled with notice on the CyclovaXC blog by noon the day of.

Preliminary Report from SaddleDrive 2016 - !A first peak at 2017 Salsa Bike Line!

High atop the mountains above Lake Tahoe, Cyclova XC is looking to the future of bicycles - Salsa and a whole lot more.  This was the view from Sunday night dinner & happy hour!
Late Summer is a time that I savor - it offers the best riding of the year (other than the amazing groomed singletrack of Winter), as well as the opportunity to look forward to the coming year.  Currently I'm high atop the mountains above Lake Tahoe, CA - at one of the bike industry's premier events known as Saddledrive!  Here, I'm identifying the trends, ideas, and products that make sense in the St. Croix Valley cycling community (and far beyond) - and bringing world class expertise to Cyclova XC!

The Zephyr Lodge - at the top of Northstar Resort was an epic kickoff to Saddledrive - QBP's exclusive opportunity for the nation's top bike shops to get the first look at next year's product!
Northstar Resort and these mountains offer an epic venue for this event - and it kicked off on Sunday night with happy hour & dinner high atop a mountain.  I'll admit this was the first time I've ever "commuted" to dinner by taking a gondola followed by a ride on a chair lift to the top of a mountain!  It was atop this mountain at the Zephyr Lodge that I enjoyed connecting with a few hundred of my bike industry friends - wetting my appetite for checking out all kinds of sweet new products, and then riding any new bikes that my heart desired!

Commuting to dinner on a gondola was a new one for this Midwesterner!

This morning I had the pleasure of seeing the entire 2017 Salsa product line - checking out every bike in the flesh!

Most of my day today was spent carefully looking at the full Salsa 2017 product line in tremendous detail.  I had the pleasure of meeting with several close friends who are Salsa Engineers, Product Managers, and athletes fresh off of the Tour Divide Race.  In the end, today was a huge part of shaping what Cyclova XC will look like this coming Winter and Summer 2017!

2016 Sasquatch Dash #4 Results and Report

Race Recap

We had another fantastic turnout on the 4th of July holiday weekend for our fourth installment of our Sasquatch Dash series.  I promised a race that would mirror your fireworks experience, going straight up, exploding, and then coming down.  Over and over again.  From what I hear, I think the course delivered.

This time Sasquatch even got out and marked the course the evening before the race.  It didn't completely prevent missed turns, but it came a lot closer.  I think we will keep this practice up for future events.  Next time Sasquatch needs to bring something to wash his hands with though.

On the ladies side we had a little lower than normal turn-out this time.  Just Tammi, Starr, and Bekah (getting double miles for summer CC training I hear).

On the men's side, Greg was off the front, never to be seen again after turning onto the Esker.

Now that we are four races into the series the overall scoring is starting to take shape.  Remember that you score your top 4 races plus any bonus points.  So starting next race some people may start throwing lower points so things will get mixed up.

As one might expect, Tammi is leading the women's field.  Starr is keeping her honest.  I don't think we have had any ladies race all four races yet though so they are still running on straight up accumulated points next time.

On the men's side, I get to ride Greg's busted collar bone one more race.  And I really only get to ride that because of the straight participation points awarded for the second race instead of straight finisher points.  He clearly beat the snot out of me that day, but unless something happens to him in the next two races he should come out on top so I'm not too worried about it.  After adding in the Stower Seven Lakes Half bonus points, Greg is comfortably sitting in first place.  He'll have to stop showing up to put that in real jeopardy.  Cory, David, and Jeff could have a good throw down for third place.

Next Race

The penultimate event will be August 6th.  The last two years we have run a predicted finish/reverse start style event.  I'm leaning away from that for this year.  It only really works if we run one of the previous courses.  I'd prefer to pick yet another course for the next event.  If there are folks that really want to do the reverse start I will entertain a petition.

Mullin's Race Report

I was anything but tapered for this event.  I was finally feeling some pop on Wednesday's sprint ride so I had given that a good effort.  Then Cory, Adam, and I had a little 2+ hour kayak, run, bike grudge match race on Thursday evening since I can't defend my title at the St. Croix Fat Cat next Saturday.  I was pretty tired jogging the hills on Friday evening marking the course but was hoping I'd feel a little better Saturday morning.

Thankfully things felt OK Saturday morning with the exception of some ridiculously tight hamstrings.  I had a downed tree to remove and for whatever reason deadlifting just a little bit of weight leaves me knotted up like crazy.  It didn't hamper my running though, just left me a little concerned about pulling something, which also thankfully didn't happen.

Greg took the group out.  By the time we hit Illinois he was 2/3 of the way up the hill while I was in a group with Steve Clark, Tammi, and Alex.  By the time we hit the Esker Greg was out of sight and Steve was starting to pull a little gap.  We held that order until just before exiting the Community trails.  Steve had a quick stop and I pulled into second place.

I could hear Steve and Tammi and perhaps one other just a few seconds back from me all the way up the Interlink trail and into the next stretch of single track.  I kept pushing my effort trying to maintain a little bit of a gap.  As we hit the Ice Age trail again I suddenly didn't hear anyone anymore.  Turns out Steve missed the turn and ended up down in the parking lot on Fairgrounds.  That may have been one of the trickiest corners since despite marking the trail myself the evening before I also just about missed the corner.

Really starting to feel the burn running across the road past the middle school towards the community trail again I took a quick peak back to see who was coming behind me.  I could see Tammi and Kevin Rogers probably 15 to 20 seconds back.  Eek.

As soon as I turned onto the Community Trail I upped my effort hoping to "get out of sight out of mind".  I may have increased the gap a little bit, but not too much.  As we headed down Kentucky I took another glance back to see Kevin with a little gap on Tammi.  I figured Kevin could close pretty well so I let loose as best I could down to the Esker and powered up the hill as best I could.

I was expecting to hear footsteps behind me at any point, but managed to hold onto my 20 second gap all the way to the finish.  I'm pretty happy with the effort.
